Cryptocurrency exchange Luno has laid off approximately 20% of its workforce, marking the second significant reduction in headcount for the Digital Currency Group (DCG)-owned platform in under three years.
The job cuts come as the company pivots toward greater operational automation while contending with persistently weak retail trading activity across the sector, according to CoinDesk.
Luno previously implemented a substantially larger reduction in January 2023, eliminating 35% of positions at that time amid what the company described as challenging market conditions. The cumulative effect of both restructuring rounds has significantly altered the exchange's staffing profile since the start of 2023.
The current reduction reflects a broader industry pattern where exchanges are streamlining operations to match reduced revenue from retail trading volumes, which have declined from peak levels seen during previous bull market cycles. Automation has emerged as a common strategic response, with platforms seeking to reduce manual processes and operational costs while maintaining service coverage.
Luno operates as a retail-focused platform with particular concentration in emerging markets, where economic conditions and regulatory developments have added additional complexity to trading activity. The exchange's positioning within DCG's portfolio of crypto companies has subjected it to the financial pressures affecting the parent company, which has faced its own restructuring challenges in recent years.
The timing of the layoff suggests ongoing financial pressures rather than a one-time adjustment, given the eighteen-month gap between major workforce reductions. Retail trading platforms globally have faced margin compression as competition intensifies and transaction fees trend downward across the industry.
The automation emphasis indicates Luno anticipates sustained pressure on staffing levels regardless of near-term market recovery prospects. Many exchanges that expanded rapidly during 2020-2021 have found themselves overstaffed relative to current revenue generation, prompting similar adjustments across the competitive landscape.
